Is Your Day Master Strong or Weak?
Learn what Strong and Weak Day Master mean in Saju, how season, roots, and chart support shape the result, and why strong is not better.
Short answer: A Strong Day Master (신강, 身强) has substantial structural support in its Saju chart. A Weak Day Master (신약, 身弱) has less support relative to forces that drain it, require effort from it, or control it.
These are technical chart conditions. Strong does not mean brave, healthy, successful, or superior. Weak does not mean timid, sick, unsuccessful, or inferior. Your chart is checking the Day Master's support network, not asking it to bench-press.
Support is the question
The Day Master (일간, 日干) is the Heavenly Stem at the top of the Day Pillar. To assess its strength, practitioners compare two broad sides.
| Supporting the Day Master | Drawing on or challenging the Day Master |
|---|---|
| the same element, called Companion Stars | Output Stars, which the Day Master produces |
| the element that produces it, called Resource Stars | Wealth Stars, which the Day Master controls |
| seasonal backing and usable roots | Authority Stars, which control the Day Master |
This is not a vote where the side with more visible characters automatically wins. Season, roots, position, and interactions change the weight of each contribution.
Generation and control do not belong to fixed teams called "good" and "bad," either. A drain can give strong energy somewhere useful to go. Support can become excessive. The job is to see what the chart can carry.
Three classic checks: season, roots, and wider support
Korean Saju readings often summarize the first assessment with three questions.
1. Does the season support the Day Master?
Deukryeong (득령, 得令) asks whether the Month Branch and its seasonal force support the Day Master. Wood receives different backing in spring than in autumn. One character with strong seasonal timing can matter more than several out-of-season appearances.
2. Does the Day Master have roots?
Deukji (득지, 得地) asks whether the Day Master is rooted in the Earthly Branches. A Stem is rooted (통근, 通根) when its own element appears in a Branch's Hidden Stems.
Roots are not all equally usable. A primary root in season and a faint element stored in a Branch should not receive the same weight. Combinations and clashes can change a root's connection or availability. Climate affects how well an existing root's energy can function; it does not create or erase the root itself.
3. Does the wider chart support the Day Master?
Deukse (득세, 得勢) asks whether the wider chart gives the Day Master enough backing. Companion Stars reinforce its own element, while Resource Stars produce and support it. Their amount, position, and ability to function all matter.
These checks are related, but they are not interchangeable. Seasonal support is not the same as a root, and a root is not the same as help from a producing element.
What pushes the Day Master the other way
Three Ten Gods groups draw on or challenge the Day Master:
- Output Stars: the Day Master produces them, so expression uses some of its energy
- Wealth Stars: the Day Master controls them, which requires capacity
- Authority Stars: they control the Day Master, creating structure or pressure
A strong presence in one of these groups does not automatically make the chart bad or the Day Master weak. A well-supported Day Master may need a channel, a task, or a useful limit. A less-supported Day Master may experience the same demand as heavier pressure.
This is why the strength label comes before many later judgments. The same element can play a different role depending on what it meets.
Qiora uses six strength grades
Qiora divides the strength spectrum into six display grades:
| Korean grade | Qiora English label | Plain meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 극신약 | Extremely Weak Day Master | very little effective support |
| 신약 | Weak Day Master | challenge outweighs support |
| 중화신약 | Mildly Weak | near the middle, leaning weak |
| 중화신강 | Mildly Strong | near the middle, leaning strong |
| 신강 | Strong Day Master | support outweighs challenge |
| 극신강 | Extremely Strong Day Master | support is overwhelmingly dominant |
The two middle grades keep the direction visible instead of flattening both into one Balanced (중화, 中和) label. They are still chart classifications, not personality ratings.
Different practitioners and apps may produce different results. There is no single industry-wide mathematical formula for weighting season, roots, Hidden Stems, and interactions. A good result should therefore show its reasoning, not only a decimal wearing a confident outfit.
A special Following Pattern (종격, 從格) can reverse the ordinary support logic. This belongs to advanced study. Do not diagnose one from an extreme label alone.
What the label does not tell you
A strength label alone cannot tell you:
- whether someone is assertive or quiet
- whether they are physically healthy
- how talented, moral, resilient, or successful they are
- which career or partner they should choose
- which element is the Useful God
- whether a coming year will be fortunate
The better question is not "Am I strong?" It is "What kind of support and pressure does this Day Master meet, and how does the chart use them?"
That question leaves room for the rest of the person. Always a nice feature.
Find your strength label on Qiora
Open your Qiora chart and find Energy directly below Five Elements. It may show a label such as Mildly Weak. Record the label without translating it into a personality claim.
Then do three beginner checks:
- Find the Month Branch and note the season.
- Ask whether that season supports your Day Master's element.
- Look at the Five Elements section only as a visible inventory. Do not recalculate the strength grade from the largest bar.
Qiora's full calculation also uses information you have not learned to assess yet. Treat the label as a result to investigate, not a nickname to wear.
If you selected Not sure for birth time, Qiora's intended card design marks the Hour as unknown with a question mark. The Hour card remains ?; any noon-derived Hour used downstream is an internal, unverified placeholder. The internal noon placeholder can affect roots, support, and the displayed strength grade, so that grade remains provisional.
Write it that way in your notes: Mildly Weak (provisional).
The unknown-time flow may not collect a birthplace either. Near an exact Solar Term boundary, the Month Pillar may also need verification.
Next, Hidden Stems will open the Branches and show where some of those roots are hiding.

Quick answers
Is a Strong Day Master better than a Weak Day Master?
No. Each condition needs a different balance of support, output, responsibility, and restraint. Both can function well or poorly depending on the whole chart.
Does a Weak Day Master mean a weak personality or body?
No. It is a technical relationship inside the chart, not a diagnosis of character, health, intelligence, courage, or ability.
Can Day Master strength change over time?
Your natal chart remains the same. Luck Pillars and Annual Luck Pillars can add temporary support or pressure, so the conditions around the natal Day Master change even though the birth chart does not.
Why do two Saju apps give different strength labels?
They may use different weights for season, roots, Hidden Stems, combinations, and thresholds. Birth-time and birthplace settings can also differ. Compare the reasoning and input data before comparing labels.
Can an unknown birth time change the grade?
Yes. A placeholder Hour can add or remove roots and support. Near a Day or Month boundary, missing birthplace data can add further uncertainty.
Sources and editorial notes
- Both source books explain the basic contrast between support and challenge.
- Personality, health, and lifestyle claims attached directly to Strong or Weak Day Master labels were excluded.
- Qiora's current six-grade display follows its reviewed strength pipeline: Extremely Weak Day Master, Weak Day Master, Mildly Weak, Mildly Strong, Strong Day Master, and Extremely Strong Day Master.
- Qiora's internal review found that raw scores alone could contradict the three core checks. The current editorial explanation therefore prioritizes season, roots, chart-wide support, and transparent reasoning.
- This page uses Deukji for rooting across the Branches. Some schools use the term more narrowly for support from the Day Branch.
- The intended unknown-time question mark and the internal noon fallback were confirmed by the product owner. Current live behavior was checked on 2026-07-31.
