Hidden Stems: What the Branches Hold Inside
Learn what Hidden Stems are, see all twelve Earthly Branch combinations, and understand how they affect roots, Ten Gods, and element balance.
Short answer: Hidden Stems (지장간, 地藏干) are Heavenly Stems held inside the Earthly Branches. Each Branch contains one to three of them. They reveal elements and Ten Gods that do not appear among the four visible Stems, and they help a practitioner judge roots and chart strength.
The visible chart has eight characters. The reading has more than eight moving parts. Saju likes a clean grid, then quietly adds drawers.
A Branch is a container, not a single ingredient
Each Heavenly Stem carries one clear elemental identity. An Earthly Branch has a primary element on the chart, but it can hold a small mixture of Stems inside.
Tiger, for example, has Wood as its primary element. Its Hidden Stems are Yang Earth, Yang Fire, and Yang Wood. The Branch still belongs to Wood, but its interior is not Wood-only.
A Korean pantry jar is a useful image. The label tells you which fermented paste, or jang, is inside. Open the lid and you find layers formed by season, time, and fermentation. Hidden Stems are less delicious, admittedly, but the idea works.
"Hidden" describes where the Stems sit in the chart. It does not mean they are secret facts, repressed memories, or a guaranteed subconscious personality.
Main Qi, Middle Qi, and Residual Qi
When a Branch contains several Stems, they do not all have equal weight.
- Main Qi (본기, 本氣): the dominant Stem that defines the Branch's primary elemental identity
- Middle Qi (중기, 中氣): a secondary current held inside the Branch
- Residual Qi (여기, 餘氣): a remaining current carried over through seasonal transition
Not every Branch contains all three. In Qiora's standard table, Rat, Rabbit, and Rooster each contain only Main Qi. Other Branches contain two or three Hidden Stems.
Main Qi, Middle Qi, and Residual Qi describe their roles within the Branch. They are not universal percentages. Weighting differs by Branch and method. Qiora's detailed data can assign different proportions, so do not paste one 60:30:10 formula across all twelve Branches.
The twelve Earthly Branches and their Hidden Stems
The table lists Residual Qi, Middle Qi, then Main Qi, matching the inner order used in Qiora's detailed chart data. An empty cell means that the Branch has no Stem in that position.

You do not need to memorize this table today. Bookmarking is a legitimate spiritual practice.
Hidden presence is not the same as a strong root
Suppose Water is absent from the eight visible characters but Gye Water appears inside Dragon. Water is present in the deeper inventory. That matters.
It does not mean Water is now as strong as a visible Stem or a main seasonal root. Presence, quantity, rooting, and usable strength are separate questions.
This distinction becomes especially important in storage Branches such as Dragon, Dog, Ox, and Goat. Dragon's Gye Water is a Middle Qi stored in a grave or reservoir position. Qiora's reviewed rooting rule treats that as a potential root, not an automatically effective one. Season, climate, and whether the storage is activated still matter.
By contrast, Im Water as the Main Qi of Pig is a strong root for an Im Water Stem. Im Water as the Middle Qi of Monkey has a meaningful growth-stage root. Same element, different address, different rent.
What Hidden Stems change in a reading
Hidden Stems affect several later layers.
- Element inventory: An element missing from the surface may still be present inside a Branch.
- Rooting: A visible Stem may connect to its own element below.
- Day Master strength: The quality and availability of roots contribute to Deukji and the wider strength judgment.
- Ten Gods: Each Hidden Stem forms a Ten Gods relationship with the Day Master according to element and Yin-Yang polarity.
- Chart Structure: The Month Branch's Hidden Stems help practitioners assess what seasonal force becomes visible and functional.
- Interactions: Combinations and clashes can change how available a stored current becomes.
Hidden does not mean weak in every case. Main Qi lives inside a Branch too, yet it defines that Branch's primary element. The useful question is: which Stem is hidden, where is it stored, and can it function?
Find the Hidden Stems in your Qiora chart
Qiora's standard Branch detail currently shows the Branch, animal, polarity, primary element, and Ten God, among other fields. It does not show the full Hidden Stems list there.
Use this page as your lookup:
- If your birth time is confirmed, write down all four Earthly Branches. If it is unknown, record only the confirmed Year, Month, and Day Branches and mark the Hour
unverified. - If the birth falls near a Day Pillar or exact Solar Term boundary, mark the Day or Month Branch
provisionaltoo. - Find each confirmed or provisional Branch in the table above.
- Copy its Hidden Stems from Residual to Main Qi.
- Circle any Hidden Stem that matches your Day Master's element. That is a possible root to investigate, not an automatic strong root.
- Add a Ten Gods field and leave it for the next page.

Quick answers
Are Hidden Stems extra characters in my Saju?
No. The Four Pillars still contain eight visible characters. Hidden Stems describe the internal composition of the four Branches.
Does every Earthly Branch have three Hidden Stems?
No. In Qiora's standard table, a Branch contains one, two, or three Hidden Stems.
If an element appears in Hidden Stems, is it still missing?
It is absent from the visible eight characters but present in the deeper chart. Its actual weight depends on its position, season, and ability to function.
Is Main Qi always stronger than Middle or Residual Qi?
It is the dominant current of its Branch, but the full chart can change how any Stem functions. Do not turn the three labels into fixed percentages or guaranteed outcomes.
Do Hidden Stems reveal my subconscious?
Not by themselves. Some modern readings use inner-life metaphors, but "hidden" first describes a technical chart location.
Sources and editorial notes
- The Qiora table follows the Hidden Stems used by its analysis data, including one Stem for Rat, Rabbit, and Rooster; two for Horse and Pig; and three for the other Branches.
- Qiora renders 地藏干 as Hidden Stems.
- The stronger source book correctly treats Branches as layered containers, but its personality claims were not adopted.
- The weaker source book mentions hidden elements but does not give enough detail for rooting or weighting.
- Qiora's reviewed root logic distinguishes Main Qi, growth-stage Middle Qi, Residual Qi, and storage-stage Middle Qi. A stored element is not automatically an effective root.
