Learn what Daeun and ten-year Luck Pillars mean, how they are calculated, and how to read a decade without treating it as a fixed prediction.

Short answer: Daeun (대운, 大運) is a sequence of Luck Pillars that unfolds across a lifetime, typically in periods of about ten years. Each Luck Pillar brings one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch into contact with the natal chart. It changes the conditions around the chart, not the eight characters you were born with.

Think of the natal chart as your permanent operating system and Daeun as the decade's workload. Same machine, very different number of browser tabs.

The natal chart stays fixed

A Luck Pillar does not add a missing character to your natal chart or permanently repair an element. Its Stem and Branch create temporary relationships with the Day Master and the natal characters.

When the decade ends, the natal chart has not been rewritten. You may have changed because of what you practiced, built, lost, learned, or chose during it. That is biography, not an element sneaking into your birth certificate.

How a Daeun sequence is calculated

The sequence begins from the Month Pillar and moves forward or backward through the sixty Stem-Branch pairs. In the traditional rule used by Qiora's chart data, a man born in a Yang year or a woman born in a Yin year moves forward. A man born in a Yin year or a woman born in a Yang year moves backward.

The starting age of the first Luck Pillar comes from the distance between the time of birth and the relevant monthly Solar Term boundary, called jeolip (절입, 節入). A forward sequence measures to the next monthly boundary, while a backward sequence measures to the previous one. A common conversion treats about three days as one year. This is why one person's first Luck Pillar may begin around age two while another's begins around age eight.

Calculators can differ when they use different boundary times, time standards, or rounding rules. Qiora supplies the direction, starting age, and displayed age range. Beginners should read those values rather than rebuild the clock with a calculator and optimism.

What arrives in one Luck Pillar

Every Luck Pillar has a Stem and a Branch. Read both.

The Stem is visible and often leads the early half of the period.
The Branch carries its own element, Hidden Stems, interactions, and Twelve Stage.
Qiora treats the early half as more Stem-led and the later half as more Branch-led, while both remain active across the decade.

The arriving pair is then translated into Ten Gods relative to the Day Master. A Resource Stem may make learning, credentials, recovery, or support more prominent. An Authority Branch may bring responsibility, rules, pressure, or institutional work to the foreground. Neither label guarantees a specific event.

Six checks for reading a decade

1. Compare it with the Day Master

Identify the Ten God relationship of the incoming Stem and the Branch's Main Qi. Do not turn that relationship into a job title or event.

2. Recheck strength and capacity

The same Wealth or Authority influence can feel useful in one chart and exhausting in another. Day Master strength is one layer, not the whole verdict.

3. Check Chart Structure and Useful God

Ask whether the arriving energy helps the existing Chart Structure function, supports the Useful God, or adds strain to an already difficult pattern. A missing-element count cannot answer this.

4. Read interactions with the natal chart

Combinations, Clashes, Punishments, Breaking, and Harms show where the decade meets existing structures. A Clash can disturb, release, relocate, or force renegotiation. A combination does not automatically transform.

5. Separate the early and later phases

The early years may express the Stem theme more clearly, with the Branch becoming more noticeable later. The handover is gradual. A Daeun transition is a crossfade, not somebody slamming a cosmic light switch.

6. Layer the ten Annual Luck Pillars

The decade sets the broad climate. Each Annual Luck Pillar (세운, 歲運) adds a more precise year. A favorable year can appear inside a demanding decade, and a difficult year can appear inside a supportive one. That is detail, not contradiction.

Worked example: one decade, mixed evidence

Qiora's reviewed practice input uses an Im Water Day Master and a Yin Metal Ox (辛丑) Luck Pillar covering 2026 through 2035, from ages 54 through 63.

The Luck Pillar Stem is Direct Resource.
The Branch's Main Qi becomes Direct Officer.
Its Yin Metal Stem clashes with the Eul Wood of the natal Hour Pillar, while the Ox Branch clashes with and punishes the Goat Month Branch.
The Ox's Main Qi also brings Direct Officer, which can provide structure when its responsibility is manageable.
Qiora's engine gives the decade a challenging overall tendency. The annual sequence is favorable in 2026, mixed from 2027 through 2030, challenging in 2031, mixed in 2032 and 2033, and favorable in 2034 and 2035.

So the useful reading is not "ten bad years." Resource can support study, documentation, recovery, or better advice. Officer can increase structure and responsibility. The difficult interactions say that some of this support may arrive with pressure, restructuring, or duties that need firmer boundaries.

The bright years are not cheat codes either. They are windows in which the year's pair interacts more helpfully with the decade and natal chart. Use them to schedule an action after confirming the real conditions.

Read the decade-level tendency first, then the early and later phases, and finally the individual years. Jumping straight to the highest score is the timing equivalent of reading only the last page of a mystery novel.

For each claim, ask:

Future claims stay conditional. Past years are where the method earns trust.

Daeun is not a ten-year event prediction

A Luck Pillar can describe a period in which certain kinds of situations become more available or demanding. It cannot guarantee:

promotion, marriage, wealth, or relocation
bankruptcy, separation, illness, or loss
an exact event date
the choices another person will make

Use current evidence for current decisions. Contracts, medical results, finances, safety, laws, and other people's consent do not become optional because a decade looks supportive.

If the birth time is unknown

The Daeun Stem-Branch order is primarily determined by the Month Pillar, Year Stem polarity, and selected gender. If the Year and Month Pillars are confirmed, that order may remain usable without a confirmed Hour. The exact starting age, calendar-year range, and transition date can still be provisional because the birth time affects the distance and rounding calculations.

The full interpretation is also provisional. Qiora may use noon internally to complete the Four Pillars, even though the Hour card is intended to show ?. A fallback Hour can create false interactions and affect strength, Chart Structure, and Useful God analysis.

Near a monthly jeolip boundary, the Month Pillar and Daeun order may change. Near Ipchun, the Year Stem and direction may also change. Near a Day Pillar boundary, the Day Master and every Ten God interpretation of the Luck Pillar may change. Noon is never evidence of the actual birth time.

A four-line Daeun audit

Write four lines before acting on any decade claim:

Decade theme: What relationship do the arriving Stem and Branch create?
Chart contact: Which confirmed natal character or structure do they affect?
Time resolution: Is this a decade theme, an annual window, or a current fact?
Decision evidence: What non-Saju information would confirm the action?
